3-Week Hybrid Airway Management Course

INTRODUCTION

Airway management is of paramount importance in the care of severely injured, critically ill, or unconscious patients. The knowledge and skills to ensure that the airway in this category of patients is handled professionally can be acquired through training by seasoned professionals in airway management. These professionals are all members of the Society for Airway Management. The Society for Airway Management will provide this training in conjunction with Sedaring Consults and Premium care limited in a 3-week course.

OBJECTIVES OF THE AIRWAY TRAINING COURSE

  1. To equip participants with relevant physiology, anatomy, physics, pharmacology and technical knowledge in airway management.
  2. To equip participants with communication skills, protocols, and ethics in airway management.
  3. Teach the various aspects of, methods and devices used for airway management in different categories of patients.
  4.  Conduct practical sessions and simulations of different scenarios in airway management.
  5. Train participants in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and transportation of critically ill or severely injured patients.
  6. Conduct tests, certification examinations, and award certificates to successful candidates.

TRAINING PROGRAMME

The course will be a 3-week training comprising of 2 weeks of virtual lectures and 1 week of practical sessions. The certification examination will be held after the completion of the course. Virtual lectures will hold as follows;

Mondays –Fridays, 9 am-1.30 pm daily.
Practical sessions;
(a) 2nd Saturday, 10-1 pm, BLS practical session/certification -20% of scores
(b) 3rd week Monday-Wednesday, 9 am to 3.30 pm daily (physical participation on-site in Lagos)
Tests; 2 Saturdays, 9.00-10am (2 tests)-20% of scores
Final examination; written papers (MCQs)- 20% of scores
OSCE questions/ skills assessment- 40% of scores
Results; Pass -75%, distinction- 85% and above. Failure would require a re-sit after another payment for the examination (40% of the total fees). Participation in all aspects must be 100% for the certificate to be awarded.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

1. Undergraduate degree in biological sciences with work experience in a critical care unit or transport of critically ill patients or emergency medical technicians ( EMTs)
2. Registered Nurses working in or intending to work in emergency or critical care units or involved in the transport of critically ill patients.
3. Medical officers, post-NYSC with work experience or intending to work in emergency or critical care units or are involved in the transport of severely injured or critically ill patients.
4. Surgical, pediatric, obstetric, and Internal medicine residents or consultants who care for patients in emergency and critical care units or wish to acquire knowledge and skills in airway management.

RESOURCES REQUIRED

1. A laptop, tablet, or IPAD.
2. Adequate data for full participation in virtual lectures and tests.
3. Physical availability for all the practical/ hands-on sessions.
